Oodles and Oodles of Oodles

OodlesEvery now and then I get a brainwave to share some photos of the dogs we walk.  Sometimes they’re very different dogs – big, small, fat, thin, happy, grumpy and the rainbow of colours… Well, not the rainbow but you get what I mean.

The other day we were wandering around Port Melbourne and it struck me that we were getting more comments and smiles than usual and then I realised we had a medium labradoodle (Buddy), a spoodle, a toy poodle and a small labradoodle.  I know the life of a dog walker can be an inwardly looking one meaning some things seem funnier than they are to everyone else, but I am sure you would get a kick out of seeing this pack walking around your neighbourhood!

Enjoy! Ken & Buddy

What a welcome!

2013_03_13 Pepper JoyIt is common for dogs to give us a lovely welcome when we arrive (sometimes when we get to their street!).  Today however was remarkable.

Here’s Pepper in all her glory.  She is a lovely dog and always enjoys her constitutional but today she was REALLY REALLY excited to see me.

You know it’s easy to find times when dogs joy outweigh their self control.  See the absolute joy on her face?  That’s real – I have been walking her for months now and I can tell her mood :).  She was so happy and keen to get going.  After this photo was taken she rushed through her house to her front door and was waiting for her lead when I got there.

I couldn’t believe it when I saw the photo I had taken and her owner was happy to share it.  Thanks Wendy.  This is truly an unusual photo – send me photos of your happy pets and we’ll put the best of them up on our web page and Facebook page.

A walk for a dog is more than just exercise, it is how they socialise.  How they relate to their world.   By being out there they are being the dogs they are.  Every dog we walk is happy to see us, but some days they are happier than others!

More Parks for dog walks

I have spoken here about how often we’re out and about and appear to be the only ones walking our dogs in local parks.  Of course, in the early mornings and evenings there are lots of dedicated dog owners out and about and they are to be commeded (especially in the winter cold!).

Elsternwick Park has been a favourite, with my sister’s family (and of course their dog Jackson!) enjoying it for years – even after a move further down the bay.

Lots of off leash areas.

Some really interesting parts of the park including a lake.

Easy parking – or walk there.

Would you believe that I lived around the corner (literally…) from this park for 5 or 6 years and NEVER went there.  Of course, if Buddy had been on the scene we would have spent a lot of time here.  It’s a fantastic place and one of those parks with lots of different spaces – enjoy just one part or them all on one long walk.  Whether it’s looking over the lake, the children’s playground, the wide-open spaces or amongst the trees, lots of places to sniff and play for the dogs (not on the playground) and quiet even with the traffic rushing past.

It is just one of those places where you can rest or run around or in summer cool down in the shade.

If you see us at Elsternwisk Park walking the dogs, come up and say hello. There is always a little reward for your doggy friend on hand!

Queenie Queenie who has the ball?

As promised, I have been keeping my eye out for places which welcome our doggy friends.  While in Caulfield the other day Buddy and I found a wonderful place called Queenie Apple (768 Glenhuntly Road, Caulfield) and met Melissa and her team.

Not only was there a wonderful promotion from the City of Glen Eira offering a FREE cup of coffee to the first 20 or so dog owners registered to the Council, there is a huge variety of allergy sensitive foods (including gluten-free) AND they have great coffee… Served with a smile and what I have found to be genuine delight! AND Buddy felt right at home with his doggy friends (we stopped there after a dog walk recently).

See our Facebook page for a very special new offer for Dog Concierge customers who visit Queenie Apple!  While you’re at our page, please Like us!!  Go on you know you want to!!!  Buddy will send you lots of woofs and licks.  🙂

Caulfield is a great place for dog walks with so many dog parks you have plenty of safe places to roam around.  I’ve also found the other dog owners very welcoming  – we always get a smile and a hello when people see us wandering around!  Next time you see us, come up and say hello.

EMERGENCY AVERTED

Everything is fine now, so don’t worry!  My nephew had a fall the other day and he broke his arm which meant he was out of action for a few days – right in the middle of school holidays too.

Now with all of the comings and goings my sister and brother-in-law couldn’t handle Jackson the wonder-golden-retreiver…  He needed walking, feeding, attention at the Vet (a pre-existing condition) and even trip to the Groomer.  Of course, they got the family rate!

But the rushing around reminded me about all sorts of emergencies which have resulted in Dog Concierge needing to come to the rescue:

  1. Injury/illness of key family member
  2. Injury/Illness of the doggy family member
  3. Work emergencies (or at least too much!)
  4. Holidays
  5. Weather
  6. Traffic
  7. Ran out of dog food
  8. Delayed plane
    And so many more…

You know it doesn’t have to be an emergency to call us.  In fact we get the best results with regular interaction with your dog.  I firmly believe that regular dog walks and social interaction are key to a well-balanced dog.

Saving the world, one poo at a time

This is one post which won’t have a picture associated with it!

I know I walk dogs and I am sometimes called upon to do a dog poo clean-up of backyards for my customers (if there is a function or the house is up for sale or whatever), all of which is fine.  I am however appalled at the amount of dog poo which is out there especially as I am the one most likely to walk in it if it is within a couple of kilometre radius.

Our team routinely keeps a supply of bags on us and also in the van as a backup.  Many dog parks nowadays have dispensers with bags for FREE.  If caught short, most dog owners are even happy to share!  It is not a difficult task…

I have been on a mission over the last few months to add one additional poo pickup each time we’re out – either just Buddy and me, or with a group of dogs.  I know it won’t solve the problem overnight but it is so easy to do.  Our mission began when my neighbours (most have dogs) and I became unhappy with the amount of dog poo around so we decided that rather than complain to each other we would become the solution!

We all know that owning a dog is good for us. They bring us such joy and I would like more people to know the same feeling.  A simple poo pickup helps remove a major perceived negative of dog ownership and promotes our open areas even more.  Go on join in the mission – one extra poo pickup is so easy.

Dog Friendly places to go

Confessions of a dog walker and his dog…   I have a rule when it comes to Buddy – he comes with me whenever he can.

I also really enjoy a good cup of coffee.  And the second cup is always better than the first one  – it is a complete joy for me.  In my travels I have come across great places to go which are dog friendly too.  So I though we might include a few of them in the Blog.

Pound Cafe, South Yarra (down Oxford Street, off Chapel Street) has always been a place Buddy and I have been happy to go to.  The coffee is great and Albert and the team are always happy to see us both.  Today, we found ourselves (again) in South Yarra and happened upon Pound Cafe (again!).  Not only is their coffee great but they have a wonderful menu and they LOVE dogs!

They have just gained some extra space as their footpath has been extended at long last – making even more room for people and their doggy friends too!  We usually stop there mid dog walk, but there are plenty of dog owners who go there as a final destination too. Have a look at their Facebook Page – we’ve liked it from the Dog Concierge Facebook Page.  I just noticed Buddy has a doppelganger in their photo gallery!

If you do get to South Yarra, get down to Pound Cafe and let them know that the Dog Concierge sent you!

All alone in Caulfield Park, or so we thought

We have had a busy day today (of course, I’m not complaining) but it felt very strange to be at Caulfield Park with virtually no-one around us.  It made for a fun time for the dogs but it got me to thinking about where all of the people might be – after all it is school holidays and when I was a kid, the park was always on my agenda.

Anyway, as Buddy and the others sniffed away, we wandered to the other side of the park and found them!  I mean there were heaps of kids on the play equipment, running around and generally making the noise you hope kids who are playing make!  It was just the right amount of chaos – this coming from someone who deals with groups of dogs every day. 🙂

I was so pleased to see this fantastic community space – I imagine there were plenty of kids in the dark playing with their computer games too.  Being someone who is outdoors most of the time (rain or shine) it was wonderful to see young kids and their parents out and about.

Interestingly though we didn’t see many dogs. I wonder where they were?  Not to worry we made good use of the space!!

DogConcierge Facebook Page

We have just released our Facebook Page  and we hope that you have the time to have a look and participate in the upcoming games (Who are their parents?  and  Which Dog Park is this?  are just a couple we have planned).

In the meantime, please like us as much as we like you!!! 🙂

We routinely post our Blog to our Facebook Page, but there you will find unique content and photos and it’s a great place to share doggy experiences and stories.  Some of these will come from our dog walks and some will simply be observations we make as we travel around.

Come on – we’d love to hear and see your experiences too!

We’ve also added a Links page so that we can share with you special dog services like local Vets and other things.  Let me know if you think of something we should include here.
